Textual analysis- to study and understand texts.
Codes-refer to any element of media language that creates meaning for the audience.

Barthes theory
  • Sign- Anything that can have meaning 
  • Signifier- The thing that creates the meaning
  • Signified- The meaning that is created


Hermeneutic codes (enigma codes)- Something with in the media product that creates mystery and suspense. Makes the audience ask a question (who, what, where, when) Is it going to happen
Proairetic codes (action codes)-Something within a media product that suggests that something is going to happen. eg. is someone pulls out a gun=someone is going to get killed. a woman applying red lipstick=going on a date or romantic scene.
Symbolic codes-the language, dress or actions of characters, or iconic symbols that are easily understood.
