 Introduction to film industries

What is the purpose of any media product? The sole purpose of any media product is to make money.

Film is a specialised institution.

The birth of the film industry-

  • Films use to be made without sound.
  • In Dec 1895 it was the first time a projected film was shown for a paying audience.
  • Louis Le prince created the first motion picture camera in 1880
When something  is standardised it is created at an acceptable level. (Standardised product)  

Preproduction- Casting, Costume designers, Set designers, Writers, Location scout, Story board and shooting schedule, Cinematographer

Production- Transport, Catering, Accommodation, Hairdressers, Make-up Artists, Film crew, Lighting, Actors, Stunt doubles, Director, Producer

Post Production-Editing, Marketing, Advertisement, Soundtrack and Composer, Distribution, Visual affects   


The studio system- a group that make films 

Production- the making of a film 

Distribution- how a film is put out into the world eg cinemas (theatrical distribution) Netflix (digital distribution)CDs(physical distribution)

Conglomerate- The  process of company buying another company to create a bigger company. It eliminates competition. eg. Disney buying Pixar 

Vertical/horizontal integration 

Digital technologies- Anything that runs on a computer.

Regulation- The rules that all media industries must follow.

Convergence- Where 2 previously separate media industries combine.

Exhibition- To show a film
