Tabloid- The Daily Mirror
Binary opposites-
- Hard and Soft news: 'Mr Bates: it’s not enough' and 'What made Holly miss Dancing on Ice launch?'
- Black and White: use of the white writing on a darker background makes the cover story stand out more
- Celebs and the public: a picture of a man from the public alongside many celebs such as Rishi Sunak, the PM.
Hermeneutic code- 'Mr Bates' Not a well known name so it leaves the reader in the dark about who he is. 'It’s not enough' again doesn't give away exactly what the story is about so the reader will want to read more to find out.
Symbolic Code- The use of Georgia Harrison wearing a red dress on the story in the right corner creates meaning for the story. The colour red has connotations of love and romance which adds to the story which is about "Love Island", a dating show. This could represent to the reader a slightly sexy and romantic feel to the story, which could be used to appeal to the male gaze of the target audience.
One group that is represented on this front cover is:
Politicians- On the cover we see a small picture of the PM Rishi Sunak which in this case is being made to look inferior compared to the main image of Mr Bates which seems to shadow over the image of the PM which reflects his status in this story as it is portraying him in the wrong.
Celebrities- On the front cover you see multiple celebs who are shown as hegemonically attractive, such as Holly Willoughby, Georgia Harrison and Steven Mulhern. Presenting the celebs like this on the front cover represents them as a perfect image to their audience which could influence the audience to be like them and look up to them.
Broadstreet- The Daily Telegraph
Binary opposites-
- Hard and Soft news: The main image of Margot Robbie along side "Post office handed out bonuses for convictions" and "British ship attacked in Red Sea by Iran-trained Houthi rebels"
- Colour of writing: The use of the colours pink and blue to highlight certain articles on the front cover.
Hermeneutic code- The image of Margot Robbie as the cover image. Using this as the main image makes the audience question her relevance to any of the front cover stories. This would attract a different audience , fans of Margot Robbie, by not having any writing about her it would make the reader want to know more about her story.
Symbolic codes- The use of the bright colours Pink and Blue on the soft news stories on this front cover create meaning as bright colours have connotations
