Thanks to digital convergence when talking about radio we aren't actually talking about radio eg digital downloads

Radio is often listened to passively and unconsciously. 

Radio- Component 1 Section B: Key focus- Industry and audience Case study- Have you heard Georges Podcast?


Lesson 1- Introduction and context



Product context-

Have you heard Georges podcast is written and recorded by George the Poet, a rapper and poet.

Produced under the banner/indent of BBC radio 5 Live, it is not regularly broadcast in a scheduled format, but instead podcasted and distributed through BBC sounds.

The BBC is funded by public money and therefore has a legal remit to appeal to a pluralistic range of niche audiences. The themes in this podcast appeal to an educated and diverse audience (target audience).

Unlike traditional scheduled radio broadcasts, this podcast does not follow a traditional structure or format, and combines drama, music, poetry, discussion, and debate.


A podcast is prerecorded radio.

BBC- British Broadcasting Cooperation. BBC is an institution. Broadcast a variety of different shows eg films, news, documentaries, sport, radio, weather, music, kids shows. 

Pluralistic- appeal to a wide audience.  

BBC- In the early days the shows are very straight forward and simple. Publicly funded and publicly accountable. A mandate to 'inform educate and entertain' A requirement to reflect the needs and view of a large range of audiences. 

 

Received pronunciation- The way people spoke on the TV in the early days, but why? the only way they would be able to understand due to low quality of sound recording, also TVs couldn't be rewound or paused so what was being said needed to be clear. Additionally, this presents how the BBC was very British. And one use of the BBC was to educate and inform so by talking like this it portrays a role model for audience of how they should talk. 

PBS refers to 'public service broadcast' While the vast majority of media is 'Commercial' that is it exists primarily to ensure financial success PBS media exists to fulfil the needs of diverse and/or specialised audience over financial gain.
