bell hooks - 'Beyoncé is... a terrorist'

- Beyoncé is extremely well known and these representations that we see do have an impact on the audiences.
- In order to be empowered you have to sexualised- which is destructive and plays in the power of men.
-Women can have power in different way for example being high up in a company, be intelligent.
- bell hooks calls her a 'terrorist' as the impact is enforced on so many people due to how well known she is, the fact she is very much in the public eye and has a lot of influence.
British colonies- ideologies installed when colonised are things like language, culture
Key theory 11- Theories around ethnicity and post colonial theory- Paul Gilroy
But if colonialism has collapsed, why do we still have racism in the UK?
Racism is ingrained in to the structure of society. Instead of being incorporated in to legal systems, racial prejudices are now hegemonically incorporated, and are amplified through stereotypes that are shared through media products.
- For example, the way in which the curriculum is taught is from a very British perspective, history is taught from a British view.
- Food from around the world that in Britain have the 'best' of is actually 'stolen' from the other colonies.
That B.E.A.t (Bagheri 2012)
- Beyoncé took parts of this documentary and used them in her video for Formation:
-the area of the videos
-house in the water
-dull and discreet look
- but have left out the most significant part of the documentary, gay men- videos of them, hyper sexualised representations of men.- if formation did have these representations of gay men it could not appeal to some audiences and would minimise risk and maximise profit.
Othering- a process of separating 'us' from 'them', othering uses language to distance a group which is seen as being different and/or inferior.
Antebellum dresses- worn by wives and daughters, very specific style. Owned by women who owned slaves.
Some audiences would see Beyoncé's dress similar- this is to connote power and dominance, also to possibly attack a specific belief. Additionally by wearing this costume she is taking power away from the memory of slave owners and recontextualizing this.
